As a species, its conservational status is near threatened. The Javan subspecies used to be common on Java in 1990s, but today it is believed to be almost extinct in the wild and has been disappearing from the market.

This species is traded in large number regularly, while it has a limited range. Some number of founding individuals are kept in PCBA to gain experience for future conservation breeding.
